The Crown Perfumery was established in 1872 when William Thomson Jr. created a smelling salt intended to revive fainted women whose corsets were too tight. Thomson’s father created corsets, and one of his clients was Queen Victoria. This royal connection gave the company its name.
The company suffered financially after World War I and was acquired by Lever Brothers. The company made a moderate revival until 1939. In 1999, English furniture maker Clive Christian bought the brand and has created new fragrances
